Born in Moline, Ill., Berry found his calling while serving in the U.S. Army, where he won a talent competition as a dancer and then was assigned to the Special Services entertainment unit under the command of future Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy.

After leaving the Army, Berry went to Hollywood, where he eventually found work in television.
